Director and Cinematographer from Aardman Animation:Dave Alex
We met Dave Alex today who is a director and cinematographer from Aardman Animation. It was a very interesting talk which he also brought some puppet with him to show around the room, the puppets in the new Shaun the Sheep movie, and we all had chance to touch them. It is amazing to see the details on the characters like use real wool material to make the sweater, they also consider about the hair texture, the misty glasses and also the proportion of the characters. They all have an inner armature in order to allow them to stay in poses and would be wobbled during settings but they still need to have external armature to make sure they stay stiff during shooting. Dave Alex showed us a lot of little techniques they used during filming that fool audiences' eyes for example they shot a walking uphill shoot by placing the sets horizontally instead and in this case they do not have to build extra armatures to aid stabilizing. I especially like his foundation work when he was still in college. I admire the creativities he and his friends had and could actually produced some amazing work even though their facilities were not as good as now a days. I like his interpretation of camera angles which could really bring every characters and the surrounding come to life; like a straight camera angle shoot but placing characters on different places so as to create a sense of depth and realistic environment.
